Vintage Italian Knitwear
Some of the best vintage knitwear came from Italy in the 1960s and 1970s, thanks to the arrival of Italy’s ready-to-wear industry. Italian fashion looked much different than Parisian haute couture at the time – it was cleaner, with impeccable construction and bold colors.
The density of vintage knitwear lends itself well to the cooler months. Below we have assembled a colorful variety of vintage knitwear (not all from Italy, but most), as seen on eBay and etsy this week. Click on each image to see the full listing.

Off to the Laces
I don’t know much about royalty or Kate Middleton or what a queen consort-to-be does in her free time, but I know a knockout dress when I see one. Ever since the Duchess of Cambridge appeared this summer in a blue lace dress by Erdem, copycats have popped up all over the Internet.

I love the simplicity of the dress with its bateau neckline and half sleeves, it feels very vintage 1960s. There are many ways you can work a lace dress into your rotation this season without looking like a fad-chasing Kate wannabe. We found a number of timeless, vintage pieces on etsy and eBay this week. Party Girl
I sense a dark cloud creeping in the distance. You feel it too, I know. That foreboding sense of doom is the end of summer, and thus, the beginning of the holiday party season.
So you’re going to need a new evening gown. Don’t even think about wearing that one from last year. It’s tired and you know it. Be adventurous. Wear some freaking color you Quaker; it’s winter not a funeral. Or if you do go with black, make sure there are interesting details like lace or beading. Don’t make the accessories do all the work. And have some fun, man. It’s just a dress.
Here are some choice cocktail/evening gowns we found on etsy and eBay this week. Click on each image to see the full listing. Cheers.

Featured Seller: Celapiu
Sometimes I come across a shop on etsy and find myself favoriting nearly everything in the store. Celapiu is one of those sellers.
Celapiu [tse-lah-pyoo] is an independent Polish label specializing in cold weather accessories: scarves, gloves and various head coverings. The label was founded in 2005 by designer Celina Dębowska.
My favorite items are her felted fox scarves (no foxes were harmed in the making of these accessories). “Felt Fokses” can be made to order in many different shades, just contact the shop with your specifics. They are simply adorable. Click on each image below to see the full listing.

Spotted at Target
Spotted at Target yesterday, some decent vintage-style cloches for $16. Not bad, Target, no bad. Unfortunately, they only come in one size and my head is on the small side. But hey, it’s what’s inside that counts, yeah? If you love this style, I recently found a nice crop of them on eBay and etsy. Click here to see them all.
1940s Style: The Factory Girl to The New Look
Los Angeles Confidential Magazine recently featured a spread on an updated 1940s look for Fall, which sparked today’s post. But before we get into all of the amazing vintage pieces we found on etsy and eBay this week, we have a mini fashion history lesson.
Women joined the workforce en masse in the early 1940s as all the men went off to fight in the War. From the kitchen to the factory, from making pies to welding ships, women did it all.
During the War years (1939 – 1945), women’s apparel emphasized broad, square shoulders and a trim, fitted waist. Above the waist, tops featured rounded necklines and shorter collars. Below the waist, high waisted trousers, flared shorts and knee-length skirts. Below the knees, oxfords and pumps. Sadly, nylon stockings were rationed for parachutes.

Post-War, factory girls retired their dungarees and took on a softer, more feminine look. Christian Dior’s debut haute couture collection, released in February 1947, signaled a triumphant return to glamour, with its sloping shoulders, cinched waist, accentuated bust and wide hips. Skirts were significantly longer and fuller than the War years. The stunning clothes, cut to emphasize the female form and made out of seemingly endless yards of luxurious fabric, were revolutionary. Dior’s collection was pronounced “The New Look” and made him a star.

Mad Men Style: 1960s Fedoras
Today on This Week’s Look, we are sipping afternoon mimosas on the lanai and talking men’s hats. Specifically, vintage 1960s stingy brimmed fedoras, trilbys and Homburgs. Think Leonardo DiCaprio in “Catch Me if You Can.” Sammy and Frank vacationing in Palm Springs.
But enough about Leo, Sammy and Frank, let’s talk about my amazing Harold. He is a hat man. Correction: He is THE hat man. Among other things. And I am, of course, a hat woman, so it is only natural that I should fall in love with a man who can pull off a hat every day of the week. In fact, he is such a natural, I suspect the nurses put a wool felt fedora on him when he was born rather than one of those snuggly newborn skull caps. He is French after all, so one can never be sure what goes on over there. Harold’s hat collection isn’t necessarily staggering. That is to say, his collection will never rival mine in sheer numbers, but it is robust enough to provide a hat for just about any occasion.
Back to my original thought. 1960s trilbys. These short-brimmed hats are destined to become ubiquitous once the new season of Mad Men premieres next year, so if you’re in the market for one, I would do my shopping now before the rise in demand and prices follow. There are some amazing, original 1960s toppers out there right now, and we have selected some of the best for our readers. Click on each image below to see the full listing.
