Unisex Vintage Vests

with 2 comments

Welcome to part two of our two-part expose’ on vintage vests. As you may recall, part one skewed more toward our feminine demographic, with plans to showcase the masculine end of the vest range in part two. However, as we plowed eBay and etsy for vintage men’s vests and waistcoats, we began to see this as more of a unisex offering. Whatever your genitalia, this week we found something for everyone, including fans of “Back to the Future.” Click on each image below to see the seller’s listing.

Winter’s Veil

with 2 comments

This Week’s Look is still on holiday but we couldn’t resist a quick post for our voracious readers. Anyway, fashion never really takes a vacation, now does it? Or perhaps it does. How else can you explain resort wear?

Now that we have washed our hands of all that holiday hullabaloo we can start getting serious about spring 2012. As we mentioned last year, pleats and pastels and lace will be everywhere come pollen season and I can barely contain the urge to dust off my canary yellow veiled fascinator for brunch. Oh I almost forgot! I now have one in lavender too! Still, we are sensitive to the fact that some of you have been too busy cramming turkey and egg nog down your gullet to shop for vintage accessories. That’s why we’re here, to help you out of the winter doldrums and into something bright and light for spring. To that end, we searched etsy this week to find you some of the prettiest spring-inspired vintage toppers around. Click on each image below to see the actual listing.

A Little Biased

leave a comment »

This would be an amazing wedding gown for the bride who wants a glamorous vintage look. And even more stunning is the current bid on eBay; only $56. The auction ends in two days. This is an original 1930s bias cut silk gown with train. The open back is incredible and this cut splendidly whittles the waist. Click on the images below to see the full listing.

Featured Seller: Nicholettes

with 2 comments

I apologize for my lengthy fashion blogging absence, but things got kind of heavy. My beloved brother Sean passed away suddenly at age 38, which is far too soon for anyone to leave, especially someone as amazing as him. When I left for D.C., and we still had hope that he would recover, I packed just enough to get me through a few days. Those days stretched into two weeks and I eventually found myself shopping for a dress to wear to his funeral.

And a vintage hat of course.

I want to express enormous gratitude to Nicholette Alexander, a wonderful seller on etsy who expedited the veiled hat below to me in D.C. so that I could have it in time for Sean’s funeral.

That said, “Nicholettes” (as she is known on etsy) is my featured seller this week. Similar to the one I purchased from her, Nicholettes has a number of stunning vintage hats (among other great vintage finds) available in her etsy shop right now, many of which come with free hat boxes! Party Girl

with one comment

I sense a dark cloud creeping in the distance. You feel it too, I know. That foreboding sense of doom is the end of summer, and thus, the beginning of the holiday party season.

So you’re going to need a new evening gown. Don’t even think about wearing that one from last year. It’s tired and you know it. Be adventurous. Wear some freaking color you Quaker; it’s winter not a funeral. Or if you do go with black, make sure there are interesting details like lace or beading. Don’t make the accessories do all the work. And have some fun, man. It’s just a dress.

Here are some choice cocktail/evening gowns we found on etsy and eBay this week. Click on each image to see the full listing. Cheers.

The Eton Crop and the Cloche

with 3 comments

It was the 1920s. The Great War was over, women won the vote, and the music of the Jazz Age empowered us to bebop our way through a period of sustained prosperity. Of course, women still had it tough, but we were beginning to assert our independence and break free from many sartorial and social restrictions. Indeed, our fashions reflected this new-found freedom. We wore looser, shorter clothes, bobbed our hair and discovered that make up isn’t just for prostitutes.

It was also during this time that the hairstyle known as the Eton crop (the short, slicked-down cut worn by Josephine Baker) became so popular. It is said that the Eton crop emerged during this time because it was the best hairstyle to show off the trendiest hat of the era, the cloche.

A cloche is a fitted, bell-shaped hat (originally invented by milliner Caroline Reboux in 1908), typically worn very low on the forehead. This style of hat peaked in popularity in the 1920s and continued to be seen until about 1933.

These days, whether vintage or new, cloche hats continue to represent feminism, independence and the height of style. Below we have gathered a selection of vintage, new and custom made cloche-style hats found on etsy this week. Click on each image below to see the full listing.
