This Month’s JewelMint Acquisitions
I joined JewelMint a few months back, with pieces designed by Kate Bosworth and Cher Coulter. So far, I have been very happy with my monthly acquisitions. I picked up today the indulgent cocktail ring and pair of mod square bangles below for just $19.99, thanks to a Memorial Day coupon code. Visit jewelmint.com to see their full collection. Keep in mind, they are constantly adding new looks, so even if you don’t see something you love one month, you’ll probably see three you love the next month. At least that has been my experience thus far.
A Curated Collection of Vintage Turbans
Modern men and women are privileged to have access to an infinite variety of hair products to manipulate sad tresses into any imaginable shape. But our brave predecessors had far fewer options. Back then, a bad hair day could ruin your week. Back then, fashion was the only cure for deadly hair. Hats, snoods, beanies, scarves, buckets (in a pinch), and yes…turbans.
We have for you this week an expertly curated collection of sensational vintage turbans, all available right now from various sellers on eBay and etsy. Click on each image below to see the actual listing.
And if you’re thinking, “there’s no way I could ever pull off a vintage turban!” you’re most likely correct. Only those who fully appreciate the exalted turban deserve to wear one. So march on, sister. March on.

Featured Seller: Bayan Hippo
Bayan Hippo has developed a solid reputation as a purveyor of affordable, handmade fabric handbags and totes. I have purchased two bags from this seller in the past and will likely get another one soon. With the spring and summer months ahead, I’m leaning toward the “Sailor Tote Bag” below. Reviewers rave about how well-made these bags are and apparently the rope straps are super soft too. Now I just need to settle on a color.
Most of Bayan Hippo’s bags can be custom made-to-order in different sizes, colors, longer or shorter straps, etc. Click on the images below to visit Bayan Hippo’s etsy storefront.

Vintage Cuff Links
I love vintage cuff links, especially when paired with an oversized ruffle-front tuxedo shirt over leggings, so you can imagine my delight as I passed by Dustmuffin today and saw these beauties in the window. Dustmuffin’s proprietors are so friendly and have an infectious enthusiasm that isn’t too sales pushy. They’re also quite knowledgeable. For example, I was told that the 1950s-era tropical cuff links below were hand painted and the iridescent effect inside was created using morpho butterfly wings. If you look closely you can see the veins. Fascinating! This is particularly rare nowadays as ripping the wings off of butterflies to make jewelry is somewhat frowned upon.
I also picked up the vintage aurora borealis cuff links below, which are quite stunning. The giant cocktail stones are perfect for women who love to wear french cuffs. Both of these sets of vintage cuff links were under $20 each. And they have more too. I might go back later for the 1960s-era red enamel cuff links I saw in the window.
Dustmuffin isn’t a vintage store, but they do carry some lovely vintage pieces and handmade jewelry made from re-purposed vintage stones, etc. It’s a great local shop to buy gifts. Definitely stop in if you’re in the neighborhood. Dustmuffin is located at 3517 W. Sunset in Silver Lake, 90026.
Winter’s Veil
This Week’s Look is still on holiday but we couldn’t resist a quick post for our voracious readers. Anyway, fashion never really takes a vacation, now does it? Or perhaps it does. How else can you explain resort wear?
Now that we have washed our hands of all that holiday hullabaloo we can start getting serious about spring 2012. As we mentioned last year, pleats and pastels and lace will be everywhere come pollen season and I can barely contain the urge to dust off my canary yellow veiled fascinator for brunch. Oh I almost forgot! I now have one in lavender too! Still, we are sensitive to the fact that some of you have been too busy cramming turkey and egg nog down your gullet to shop for vintage accessories. That’s why we’re here, to help you out of the winter doldrums and into something bright and light for spring. To that end, we searched etsy this week to find you some of the prettiest spring-inspired vintage toppers around. Click on each image below to see the actual listing.

Featured Seller: Celapiu
Sometimes I come across a shop on etsy and find myself favoriting nearly everything in the store. Celapiu is one of those sellers.
Celapiu [tse-lah-pyoo] is an independent Polish label specializing in cold weather accessories: scarves, gloves and various head coverings. The label was founded in 2005 by designer Celina Dębowska.
My favorite items are her felted fox scarves (no foxes were harmed in the making of these accessories). “Felt Fokses” can be made to order in many different shades, just contact the shop with your specifics. They are simply adorable. Click on each image below to see the full listing.

The Long View
Here on the blog, we like our handbags long and strong and we’re down to get the friction on (apologies to Sir Mix-a-Lot).
Sometimes, a handbag is just a handbag. Nothing more than a utilitarian vessel for your crap. Sometimes they are status symbols, carried by it girls and celebrities and coveted by the middle class. Then there are the rare ones. So astonishing on their own, they become part of the outfit.
I own such a handbag.
At an imposing 22 inches in length, my vintage black leather clutch, with its brass frame and sleek, single compartment, is the first to arrive at the party and the last to leave. One does not take this purse out on the town, the purse takes you.
It’s not easy to find an impressive specimen like mine on the Internet. If you’re in the market for an extra long purse that will command a room, you can’t really search for purses by length, it’s tedious. And length is not just important here. It’s everything. The handbags you browse must be 14 inches or longer. 16 to 18 inches is ideal. For maximum drama, 20+ inches is the holy grail. And rare. If you find one, buy it. Immediately. You’re not searching for shoulder bags here. You want clutches, envelope purses, baguettes. Vintage categories will produce better results.
To help you along on your quest, below I have assembled the results of my latest extra-long handbag search. Click on each image to see the full listing.
