I once wrote that “vintage Halston” may be my most favorite combination of words ever. If you don’t believe me then check this out. Now don’t you feel silly for doubting my veracity? Well, I’m in a very forgiving mood today so I won’t let this temporary lapse of judgment mar my opinion of you. Back to this week’s look, below is an impeccable example of vintage Halston flawless, draped one-shoulder goddess dress from the 1970s. Currently for sale on eBay and the seller is accepting offers. Lanvin’s Feminist Decade

with one comment

Bustown Modern, a constant source of vintage inspiration and great finds, published an astute blog post last year called “Lanvin’s Invisible Decade,” which you can read in its entirety here. While Bustown dismisses the label’s ubiquitous shirt dresses from the 1970s, we here at This Week’s Look take a different view. Those iconic, printed shirt dresses Lanvin churned out during the disco era may not represent the pinnacle of fashion, but those stretchy, often polyester, frocks reflect a rarely seen facet of the ’70s. They offer us a rare look at what every day women were wearing to work, to the grocery store, to pick up the kids, prepare meals, to do basically everything because, while moms were working, dads still felt entitled to do less around the house. As such, fashion had to be comfortable, versatile, easy to launder, and affordable.

So this week, we pay homage to Lanvin’s Feminist Decade, which is certainly not as titillating as the glamorous disco-era fashions of the ’70s, but a fitting tribute to all those women who work hard for the money. So hard for it, honey.

Crazy for Courrèges

with 2 comments

Those of you who follow This Week’s Look know how much we covet vintage André Courrèges. That’s why this week we are thrilled to show you this rare 1960s Courrèges two-tone mod/space age dress. Look at that hand-written label, custom designed for Bonwit Teller. Just unbelievable. This dress is everything you would expect from a 1960s Courrèges, simple structure, clean lines, and very expensive (but the seller is accepting offers). Vintage Christian Dior Prêt-à-Porter

with 2 comments

March is officially here and I’m sure you are all eager to shed your winter coats and start showing some skin. This week on eBay we were shopping for vintage sundresses and found this unbelievable 1970s Christian Dior numbered prêt-à-porter halter dress. The Dior prêt-à-porter label is between couture and boutique, which features many hand finished details but is made for domestic sizes rather than custom made for an individual. This stunning bright yellow and magenta maxi dress is actually a separate halter top and tiered skirt. Click on the images below to see the seller’s eBay listing (this set is pricey but they are accepting offers).

Gucci’s Angels

with 4 comments

Women’s Wear Daily today featured the amazing Gucci dress below, as seen on the runway for the label’s 2013 spring ready-to-wear collection. When I clicked through to the other photos from the collection, I spotted a throwback trend I’m excited to see coming back: The 1970s-era, post-space age, often monochromatic, tunic pants suit. Very Charlie’s Angels. Very Bianca Jagger. Page down for more on that. I feel a vintage pants suit post coming on. Stay tuned, disco queens.

How to Spend It

leave a comment »

This unexpected discovery is one of the reasons we love The Financial Times “How to Spend It” special issue. Designed for Marios Schwab‘s 2013 resort collection, this vintage-inspired swimsuit is made from terry cloth or “toweling” fabric with high-waist bottoms, sort of reminiscent of the 1950s, particularly when paired with the matching jacket cover-up (second photo below). For more retro beachwear looks, check out the rest of the Financial Times “How to Spend It” fashion section here.
