We Interrupt This Hiatus
This Week’s Look is taking a break this summer to focus on foster dog training and other off-internet activities, but we still couldn’t resist sharing what we found on eBay this week. This 1960s shift dress is so mod and minty fresh with its prim, high collar and adorable daisy appliques, it’s perfect for the office and the weekend. How to Spend It
This unexpected discovery is one of the reasons we love The Financial Times “How to Spend It” special issue. Designed for Marios Schwab‘s 2013 resort collection, this vintage-inspired swimsuit is made from terry cloth or “toweling” fabric with high-waist bottoms, sort of reminiscent of the 1950s, particularly when paired with the matching jacket cover-up (second photo below). For more retro beachwear looks, check out the rest of the Financial Times “How to Spend It” fashion section here.
Zigzag Into Summer
Temps are on the rise in the Americas and we here at the blog are diligently scouring the internet for your new summer wardrobe. This week we found this rad vintage 1970s zigzag mini dress on eBay. This southwestern cutie has a plunging neckline and forgiving elastic waist so it could fit a variety of sizes, depending on how loose (or tight) you like to roll. Current bid on eBay is $15. One Wardrobe Essential
Earlier this month, Banana Republic and AMC debuted a Mad Men-inspired collection in collaboration with the show’s Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant. The collection offers a modern take on 1960s style for both men and women.
With or without Janie Bryant’s help, a 1960s look is easy to pull off with a few basic pieces. One of the main staples of this look is a tailored lace shell, as pictured above left. Pair it with a pencil skirt or cropped cigarette trousers, throw a jacket over it for the office or dress it up with rhinestones for cocktails. Trust me, you will get a lot of mileage out of this piece.
You can go straight to Banana Republic’s website right now and buy this remake of a 1960s lace shell for $50, or you can pick up an original for much less. Below are some vintage and newer lace tops we found on etsy and ModCloth this week. Click on each image to see the full listing.

What Would Mrs. Roper Do?
Just three days into August, my favorite month of the year, and I’m already feeling a tinge of sadness for the end of summer. Still, as much as I relish the heat and humidity, when the thermometer ascends to triple-digits, my wardrobe inevitably suffers. It’s times like this a girl needs some fashion inspiration to see her through. It’s times like this a girl must ask herself, “What would Mrs. Roper do?”
A sassy and liberated woman of the 70s, Mrs. Roper wouldn’t let the dog days of summer bring her down. She would throw on her finest caftan (or kaftan), sexually harass her neighbors and insult her husband, all with an air of freedom and panache.
Short, long, cinched at the waist or wide open, an airy caftan is the sizzling summer secret to adding a languid air to your ensemble – without sacrificing style. Below are some of the more wearable caftans we found on etsy and eBay this week. Click on each image to see the full listing.
