Featured Seller: Bayan Hippo
Bayan Hippo has developed a solid reputation as a purveyor of affordable, handmade fabric handbags and totes. I have purchased two bags from this seller in the past and will likely get another one soon. With the spring and summer months ahead, I’m leaning toward the “Sailor Tote Bag” below. Reviewers rave about how well-made these bags are and apparently the rope straps are super soft too. Now I just need to settle on a color.
Most of Bayan Hippo’s bags can be custom made-to-order in different sizes, colors, longer or shorter straps, etc. Click on the images below to visit Bayan Hippo’s etsy storefront.
Sailor Tote Bag made by bayanhippo on etsy. Available in red & white, navy blue & white, or yellow & white. $33.
The Grand Sleep
This is not made for sleeping but for sipping martinis and whispering innuendos. Vintage 1960s shimmering peach grand-sweep nightgown with illusion mesh bodice. Made by Formfit Rogers, one of the classic lingerie and sleepwear brands from this era. Current bid on eBay is $19.99. Click on the images below to see the actual listing.
Midnight Soiree Cocktail Ring
My new favorite cocktail ring features a giant olivine glass cabochon stone on a textured antiqued gold-plated base. $29.99 on jewelmint.com. I received 60 percent off my first purchase when I signed up.
Vintage Cuff Links
I love vintage cuff links, especially when paired with an oversized ruffle-front tuxedo shirt over leggings, so you can imagine my delight as I passed by Dustmuffin today and saw these beauties in the window. Dustmuffin’s proprietors are so friendly and have an infectious enthusiasm that isn’t too sales pushy. They’re also quite knowledgeable. For example, I was told that the 1950s-era tropical cuff links below were hand painted and the iridescent effect inside was created using morpho butterfly wings. If you look closely you can see the veins. Fascinating! This is particularly rare nowadays as ripping the wings off of butterflies to make jewelry is somewhat frowned upon.
I also picked up the vintage aurora borealis cuff links below, which are quite stunning. The giant cocktail stones are perfect for women who love to wear french cuffs. Both of these sets of vintage cuff links were under $20 each. And they have more too. I might go back later for the 1960s-era red enamel cuff links I saw in the window.

Dustmuffin isn’t a vintage store, but they do carry some lovely vintage pieces and handmade jewelry made from re-purposed vintage stones, etc. It’s a great local shop to buy gifts. Definitely stop in if you’re in the neighborhood. Dustmuffin is located at 3517 W. Sunset in Silver Lake, 90026.
